Until the establishment of the Ordnance Survey in 1824, the units of measurement employed in area calculation and map-making were often localized: while maps produced in Ireland commonly used the perch (approximately twenty-one feet) as a standard unit, surveyors working in Cork and Waterford preferred the English perch (sixteen feet six inches), while the "Cunningham perch" (eighteen feet nine inches), named for an area in Scotland, was used across Ulster.
