Mature chromatophores are often grouped by the color of their reflectance under white light: xanthophores (yellow), erythrophores (red), iridophores (reflective and/or iridescent), leucophores (white), melanophores (black/brown), and cyanophores (blue).
The new approach, by contrast, is built on the unusual characteristics of certain chromatophore or pigment-bearing cells, called erythrophores, from Siamese fighting fish.
Usually, erythrophores are the dendritic chromatophores that contribute the reddish components to the integumental coloration (2).
