My first German shorthair was a Deutsch Kurzhaar. If that sounds confusing, it certainly was at the time nearly 50 years ago when, while living in Kansas, I answered an ad that read: "German shorthaired pointer for sale.

The Verein Deutsch Drahthaar-Group North America (VDD-GNA) and the North American Deutsch Kurzhaar Club (NADKC) train and test their dogs for blood tracking, using the Garmin Alpha, a very accurate GPS with a color map display showing your location, your dog's and the track, to record and document progress.
Consequently, by the early I 870s the breed type was established in Germany, the National Deutsche Kurzhaar Klub was formed and an elaborate hunt testing program, was implemented.
The German wirehaired pointer and the pudelpointer were up to the task; the Drahthaar (wirehair) challenging the popular Kurzhaar (shorthair) in numbers as well as ability and the pudelpointer, comparatively obscure, but on a percentage basis, as good as they come.
Among this diverse array of K9 hunting companions are: Weimariners, English Pointers, German Short Haired Pointers (Kurzhaars), German Wire Haired Pointers (Drahthaars), Springer Spaniels, and Brittany Spaniels.
